Dupuytren’s Contracture
Understanding Dupuytren's Contracture
Overview: Dupuytren's Contracture is a condition that affects the hands, causing the fingers to gradually bend towards the palm and limiting their movement.
Common Symptoms:
Lump or Nodule: A firm lump or nodule may develop in the palm, often near the base of the fingers.
Finger Bending: Over time, one or more fingers may start bending towards the palm, making it difficult to straighten them.
Hand Thickening: The skin on the palm may thicken, and cords may form, pulling the fingers inward.
How It Happens: Dupuytren's Contracture occurs when the connective tissue beneath the skin, called the fascia, thickens and forms cords. These cords can pull the fingers into a bent position. The exact cause is not always clear, but it's more common in individuals with a family history of the condition and those of Northern European descent. Many contractures will never need any treatment and can be managed through observation. If the contracture causes the hand and fingers to bend enough so the hand cannot go flat, then treatment at that point is needed.
Treatment Options:
Watchful Waiting: In some cases, if the contracture is mild and not impacting daily activities, a watchful waiting approach may be recommended.
Needle Aponeurotomy: A minimally invasive procedure where a needle is used to break apart the cords causing the contracture.
Collagenase Injections: Enzyme injections to dissolve the cords and improve finger movement.
Surgery (Fasciectomy or Fasciotomy): Surgical removal or release of the thickened tissue to straighten the fingers.
When to Seek Medical Attention: If you notice lumps or nodules in your palm, experience finger bending, or have difficulty using your hand, consult with a healthcare professional. Early detection and intervention can help manage Dupuytren's Contracture more effectively.
